Ericsson today says it successfully completed the world’s first CDMA wideband High Definition (HD) voice call. In order to make the call, Ericsson used the Enhanced Variable Rate Codec Narrowband-Wideband (EVRC-NW) codec in a lab with equipment from Qualcomm running on a CDMA network. Ericsson says that CDMA HD voice delivers speech in a wider spectral range (50Hz to 7000Hz). This increases voice quality and decreases listening fatigue. Ericsson didn’t say if or when such capabilities will become available to handsets.
