Navteq today announced Natural Guidance, a new version of its turn-by-turn navigation software that aims to make spoken navigation directions sound more natural and intuitive. The new software adds more descriptive cues in an attempt to mimic the way people actually give directions in real life. So, a Navteq app might say “turn left before the building with the green awning.” The software will look for shapes and color cues to help create the Natural Guidance experience. Navteq is wholly owned by Nokia, but its maps are used in a range of devices including Nokia phones with Ovi Maps.
