Verizon Wireless Makes LTE Network Available to Public Safety Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Verizon Wireless and Motorola Solutions today announced a new partnership that will eventually offer access to Verizon Wireless’s Long Term Evolution network to the country’s public safety agencies. The program will give public safety agencies real-time management and control of their communications in addition to nationwide roaming. Verizon Wireless spokesperson Debra Lewis explained in an email to Phone Scoop, “This alliance allows public safety to utilize their private broadband networks and roam onto our LTE network (same spectrum) as much or as little as they need for communications and other services. One of the benefits of the alliance is that public safety can take advantage of our existing LTE network. There will be ways to prioritize traffic as necessary, too.” Earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission voted in favor of mandating the use of LTE by public safety agencies for mobile broadband other communication systems.
